Is Johnny Manziel Being Treated Unfairly?

Posted by Mike Harman on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, In : Mike Harman
Everyone was impressed with the Freshman Heisman campaign of Johnny Manziel, and it will be interesting to see what he will do as a mere sophomore. But with the recent news that Manziel recently left the Manning Passing Camp for 'illness' you have to wonder if he is being treated unfairly for some of his off the field issues.

No, I'm not defending Manziel as a young player with too much spotlight around him. I actually believe that he is being treated too nicely for what he has done off the f...

Teddy Bridgewater: Better Prospect Than Andrew Luck?

Posted by Mike Harman on Monday, May 6, 2013, In : Mike Harman
Nope. He isn't a better prospect than Luck, and never will be, but I think that he could have the better NFL career. When Luck played in college you knew that he just was great, and that he would just be great in the pros. But unfortunately for him, he had never flashed that 'thing' that 'it' factor that made me believe that he will win multiple championships in the NFL. Tom Brady has 'it' and he had it in college. Big Ben and Eli Manning have always had that 'thing,' which cannot be explaine...

Why The Raiders Must Trade Down In The 2013 NFL Draft

Posted by Mike Harman on Saturday, April 20, 2013, In : Mike Harman
The 2013 NFL draft is less than a week away, and it is becoming more and more clear that this draft is one of the hardest to predict ever. While we think we know who the first pick will be, there is no rhyme or reason as to who will come next. And quite possibly the hardest pick to predict is the 3rd pick by the Oakland Raiders who seem to need help at every position. In fact there are about ten different players that could end up wearing the silver and black, which is exactly why I think the...

Seven Very Possible 2013 NFL Draft Trades

Posted by Mike Harman on Saturday, March 23, 2013, In : Mike Harman

1) TEAM X TRADES UP FOR QB GENO SMITH

This is the trade that will most likely happen, but there is no true way of knowing who will pull the trigger until it happens. There are a few teams that could pull this trigger, and here are my odds for each of them:

Jags (2nd pick) trade up with the Chiefs (1st pick)

The Jags might fall in love with Geno Smith and decide that it is worth swapping some picks to guarantee that they land him. Last year (in a much stronger draft) the Browns traded three mid/l...

2012-13 Bowl Season Preview

Posted by Mike Harman on Friday, December 7, 2012, In : Mike Harman
New Mexico Bowl
Arizona v Nevada
Arizona Favored by 9.5

Who to watch for: Ka'Deem Carey, RB, Arizona - NCAA leading YPG rusher with over 2,000 overall offensive yards this year

Who will win: Arizona should win this big. They lost to two BCS teams, two other top-25 teams, and to rival AZ State, while beating OK State and USC.

Who to bet for: Arizona gives a lot of points, but they should smoke the Wolf Pack if motivated.

Idaho Potato Bowl
Utah State v Toledo
UT State Favored by 9.5

2012 College Coaching Carousel

Posted by Mike Harman on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, In : Mike Harman
Whether you are a coach on the rise, or a coach on the hot seat, we are getting very close to the college offseason which will bring some big changes. Which coaches are bound to move to more prestigious (or NFL) jobs, and which coaches will be on the cast of 'The Experts' next year?

The Hot Seat

Gene Chizik, Auburn FIRED

It is hard to imagine a coach who won a title two years ago getting fired, but he won that title with another guy's players. If you take out that one great year he has two 8-5 ...

2012 Late Season Heisman Watch

Posted by Mike Harman on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, In : Mike Harman
We are rounding out the college football season, and it is about time for us to talk about the final Heisman watch standings. If you've read my site before, you would know that recent history favors the QB's playing in the National Championship game, and that may end up being the case this year. This year is a strange one however, because it just doesn't feel like we have that elite gamechanger on offense. There is no Cam Newton, RG3, Mark Ingram, or Tim Tebows, but we do have some guys that ...

Should The Panthers Worry About Cam Newton?

Posted by Mike Harman on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, In : Mike Harman
There have been a lot of speculations and worries about the Panthers this season after a brutal 1-4 start. There were a lot of expectations for Cam Newton to take the next step at quarterback and for the team to potentially become a contender after a relevant 6-10 season last year. And why wouldn't they? The team is one year older, and one year wiser which should translate to wins right? Coach Ron Rivera is a defensive genius that should have this team looking like the Chargers did a few year...

And The 2012 Mr. Irrelevant Is....

Posted by Mike Harman on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, In : Mike Harman
Chris Greenwood, Cornerback, Albion

Two months ago I would have pegged Chris Greenwood the guy, but not now. He has caught on because he is an athletic freak that produces, and too many teams have brought him in for him to last.

Gino Gradkowski, OG/C, Delaware

Gradkowski is another guy that could have once been the guy, but I think too many people will like his last name too much to let him last.

Shawn Loiseau, LB, Merrimack

This is my guy. There is something that I really like about Loiseau. It's...

Five 2012 Draft Sleepers

Posted by Mike Harman on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, In : Mike Harman
1) Travis Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma

I have loved Travis Lewis forever. One of my first posts on this site was actually about him. He came as a surprise into the Big 12 as a Freshman and looked like one of the most dominate players in football, but he looked just above average the rest of his career. All I know is that he has the potential to be a top-10 outside linebacker in the draft, and I love his potential.

2) Terrance Ganaway, RB, Baylor

Ganaway is a name that you probably heard a lot in college...

Five Guys That Could Break Into The First Round

Posted by Mike Harman on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, In : Mike Harman
1) Jeff Allen, OT, Illinois

Allen is one of those guys that a lot of people think could go early in the second round because of some LT potential, but very few have him in the first round. Last year the Seattle Seahawks drafted James Carpenter over one of the guys that was supposed to go in the first round, and don't be surprised to see a team grab him over Mike Adams or Jonathon Martin.

2) Vinny Curry, DE (3-4 LB), Marshall

Vinny Curry is a guy that doesn't have the sex appeal of some of the ot...

NCAA BRACKETOLOGY PART 3

Posted by Mike Harman on Monday, March 12, 2012, In : Mike Harman
ELITE 8

SOUTH REGION CHAMPIONSHIP
12) VCU v 3) Baylor

Looking back to my earlier picks I will be the first person to say that VCU is a risk in every single game they play, but they play a gameplan that could put them in the spot to get here. But even if Kentucky is in this spot I think that they will lose to Baylor (or even Duke). Kentucky walked through a pretty easy SEC schedule and had a lot of close games. Sometimes I would rather take a team like Duke or Baylor that have gone through a lot ...

EAST REGION

ROUND 1

1) Syracuse v 16) UNC Ashville

Syracuse

8) Kansas State v 9) Southern Miss

Southern Miss is a team that plays to the level of its competition which could make it a lethal force in the tournament, but unfortunately they drew a Kansas State team that can beat anybody. I like KSU here.

Kansas State

5) Vanderbilt v 12) Harvard

Vanderbilt AKA the team that can't beat 12's and 13's pulls another team with the potential to sneak out a win. I like Vanderbilt in this game (and the tourney)...

7 Possible Moves For The 2012 Draft

Posted by Mike Harman on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, In : Mike Harman
We still have a month and a half until the 2012 NFL draft, and there are already 2-million different rumors out there regarding the draft. In the spirit of the draft, I have seven of my own rumors or thoughts that very well could pay off come draft day.

1) A Team Trades For Robert Griffin

Ok, so this should be no shock since it has been news for awhile, but I think that it will work differently than expected. As I mentioned in my most recent mock update I'm not sold that the Rams are able to p...

Where Will Peyton Go?

Posted by Mike Harman on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, In : Mike Harman
News has just broken about the soon to be release of Peyton Manning from the Indianapolis Colts, and we have to wonder where he will end up. Sure everyone will tell you that the Skins and the Dolphins are the likely candidates, but I just don't trust that those two teams will be shoe-ins for the position. Today we go through all 32 teams and see which teams really have the best chances to land Peyton.

First off I think that there are four key factors to the decision:

WHY THE RAMS COULD TRADE THE 2ND OVERALL PICK

Posted by Mike Harman on Saturday, February 25, 2012, In : Mike Harman
A few days ago it was reported throughout the country that the Rams are entertaining the possibility of trading the 2nd overall pick in the draft to a team (Dolphins, Browns and Redskins are rumored) looking to gobble up Robert Griffin III. While this should come to no surprise to anyone, it is a very realistic possibility that it could happen.

First off the Rams aren't going to be taking Robert Griffin in the draft because they have too much tied to Sam Bradford despite how poor of a year he ...

Five Reflections from the 2011-12 Bowl Season

I have learned about 500 things from this bowl season, but I have broken it down to five things that I think need to be reflected on about the bowl season.

2011-12 NFL PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS

Posted by Mike Harman on Monday, January 2, 2012, In : Mike Harman
Wow, what an interesting NFL season that we just had. We went through a number of coaches, a number of quarterbacks, a number of wins and losses, and a number of records getting broken. Only five people have passed for 5,000+ yards in a season and three of them came this year! There are some minor surprises in the playoffs this season, and none comes bigger than with the 49ers.

Today we have the 2011-12 NFL Playoff predictions, and while doing it I will reflect my pre-season picks as well.

It has been less than 24 hours since Joe Paterno was dismissed from Penn State University, an act that I never thought would or could happen. While it is a strange line of circumstances that led to his firing, I know for a fact that it sets the precedent in place to essentially make no job safe in college football from here on out.

Week Ten Top-25 Preview

Posted by Mike Harman on Friday, November 4, 2011, In : Mike Harman
No. 25 Southern Miss (7-1) at East Carolina (4-4)

If you were to just look at records then you would pass this off as an instant win for USM, but that's why we don't just look at records. Southern Miss has had just one opponent from a BCS conference, and that was Virginia. ECU on the other hand faced Virginia Tech, South Carolina, North Carolina, and (while not BCS, they are undefeated) Houston. I think Dominique Davis pulls off the win here at home.

2011 College Football Official Heisman Standings

We are two thirds through the 2011 college football season, and the Heisman debate is heating up. We here at Draft Maven have compiled a long list of votes from quite a few experts (me) to create the official college Heisman standings. Ok, so it isn't an official list, but I (unlike 9/10's of the 'experts') understand who wins the Heisman in the current day and age, and I understand the trending of the players.

Ten Reflections From The 2011 Draft

It looks like we have nailed a couple of our predictions, while completely whiffing on some others. There are also some predictions that just need to be put into the time capsule for the future.

4) Minnesota Vikings

I think the Vikings are a much better team than they are given credit for, and I even think there is enough talent there to win 8 games if they can stay strong and healthy. Unfortunately their depth is way too fragile for my liking.

3) Detroit Lions

I'm not buying the 12-win hype that the team has. If Matt Stafford can stay healthy then eight games should be more than reachable, but that's no given. The run game is fragile and the offensive line is iffy at best. Su...

I'm not as down on the Bengals as most people, because the loss of Carson Palmer won't change that much in the long term of the franchise. The team has a ton of young talent at receiver, but they really need to reboot the defense while strengthening the rest of the offense. Overall though, I really don't think the team has a coach that can save his job and I expect a new direction come the bye week.

2011 NCAA FINAL PREVIEW

After looking at each of the six main conferences I have come together with six conference champions and a whole lot of surprises. Do I truly believe that these will be the top six teams in football? No, but I do believe that these predictions are a heck of a lot more accurate than just picking the highest ranked teams.

The Big Ten's 12 will be competing in a new way this season, and while nobody likes the names of the divisions (or the set up), we have to deal with a very different Big 10. Wisconsin and Nebraska are the early favorites to compete for the conference championship, but Ohio State, Michigan State, and Michigan would have something else to say about that. The Big 12 (10). I don't ever know what to think of this conference, and nothing has changed. In all reality the conference essentially decided to do nothing when teams were jumping off the sinking ship, and they really should have. Think about how much fun this conference would look if they had grabbed TCU and Arkansas (Arkansas is essentially a Big 12 offense anyways, and the SEC would then be able to steal FSU).

But now Texas A&M wants to join a conference that doesn't want them, and this ...

It seems like there are one or two teams that can compete in the top-15 each year, but there isn't a single team in the ACC that should sniff the top-5 based on talent. Florida State and Virginia Tech are the favorites for the conference championship game, but I'm here to tell you that one of the two teams will miss out.

The first year of the Pac 12 should be a boring one. I don't mean to be a downer, but when the conference arranged the divisions they did so to make USC look good. USC will be competing against a fading UCLA team, two average Arizona squads, Utah (can win any game, but not every game), and a Colorado team that has been the Big 12's scraps for awhile.

On the North side we have two very fun to watch Oregon teams, a growing Stanford squad, a California team that has been bright at moments, and tw...

Ok, so I ripped off an idea from ESPN that came off this week, but I think that in light of the draft season starting to come to figure itself out that some college rankings would be good. I base my rankings generally on schedule, potential, conference, and the potential to get to a championship.

If you look at draft analyst big boards around the internet you will likely see a big board that looks a little bit like the one above. Five Guys That Could Fall On Draft Day

Each and every year there are certain players that get drafted much earlier than expected. Sometimes this happens when a fringe first round player gets taken in the top-15, while other times it happens when a clear 2nd (or even 3rd) round pick gets taken in the first.

From an experience standpoint, an accuracy standpoint, a mechanics standpoint, and a character standpoint Cam Newton is not an elite prospect. Guys that impressed

Jah Reid's Stock is moving up after his combine weigh in. Find out why and why others his size aren't.

I will be going through the combine numbers, stats, rumors and news throughout the week. I have grabbed the numbers from a friend of the site http://walterfootball.com/combine

Draft Maven Interesting Draft Picks Broken Down

Posted by Mike Harman on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, In : Mike Harman

Patrick Peterson won't fall far enough to be a Jet, but how would he look as a Brown?

Every single mock draft that you see on the internet is unique and there almost always are a few "twists" that some fans either love or hate. Whether you like them or not you have to consider the entire situation of the draft including team need, the rest of the draft, and player/pick value. Last year Ndamukong Suh was an unstoppable monster in the Big 12 Championship, and in 2010 it was Lewis who tallied 6 tackles, two fumble recoveries, one pass deflection and an interception in the big game.

Oklahoma Sooner LB Travis Lewis is one of the best player that could enter the 2011 NFL Draft, and I don't understand why nobody else likes him as much as I do. Lewis jumped in as a freshman in 2008 and tallied 135 tackles, 3 ...
