Are you ready for the most exciting time of the year? Some of you will have the chance to root for your team in their bowl game this season, but you should be excited for (almost) every bowl game this season! It seems like every year there are a bunch of matchups where it is a guaranteed blow out, and there are a bunch of games that nobody cares about. This year does have a few of those on the menu, but I actually have to give some congrats to the bowl committees that made some very intriguing bowls. In fact the three most intriguing bowls to me (Insight, Cotton, Ticket City) aren't even BCS Bowls. Today we have a preview for the first slate of games which include a few very good teams that got put in some very unfair matchups.

NEW MEXICO BOWL

TEMPLE V WYOMING
SPREAD: TEMPLE -6.5

After getting scrubbed last year from a bowl game, the Owls got put into the first game this year. The Owls (AKA Bernard Pierce) are one of the best running teams in the country, and they pulled a matchup against a team that can't stop the run. Wyoming's offense is a little bit more complete, but Temple is a team that almost beat Penn State.

POTATO BOWL

OHIO V UTAH STATE
SPREAD: UTAH STATE -3.5

I understand in some ways why Vegas might have Utah State as the favorite, but I learned a long time ago to not overvalue a WAC team playing close to home in a bowl. Utah State has a lethal rushing attach, but Ohio's offense overall is strong and able to beat you any which way. Ohio also has two more wins than the Aggies who bareley scraped together wins to become a bowl team.

NEW ORLEANS BOWL

SAN DIEGO STATE V LOUISIANA LAFAYETTE
SPREAD: SDST -5.5

Ronnie Hillman's Aztecs are favored in what essentially is a home game for a Louisiana Lafayette team that last played in a bowl when my mother was 11. My gut feeling in this game is to go with the home underdog, but I think the Aztecs can pull off a big win here is Hillman can get it going.

BEEF 'O' BRADY'S BOWL

FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL V MARSHALL
SPREAD: FIU -4.5

If Vinny Curry was on offense then I think I would really love Marshall in this game. Unfortunately, though, Curry is only a skillful defensive player. I think Marshall has a chance to do some things and pull the upset, but I think I will take the home team that is balanced a lot better on offense.

POINSETTIA BOWL

TCU V LOUISIANA TECH
SPREAD: TCU -11.5

This game should be an easy win for a TCU team that lost to two bowl teams (one being RG3's Baylor), but LA Tech was actually a pretty decent team that also only lost to mostly bowl teams. LA Tech's defense isn't an easy one to defeat either, I don't think there is any way that TCU will lose the game unless they aren't motivated.

LAS VEGAS BOWL

BOISE STATE V ARIZONA STATE
SPREAD: BOISE -13.5

I really hate this game for about 3 million reasons. First off Boise State would likely have been pushed into the BCS Championship game if they hadn't missed a FG at the end of a game. Now they get pushed into a trap game against a subpar 6-6 Arizona State team. Also, why does the Vegas Bowl always schedule a highly Mormon team each year? There are just way too many things that don't make sense here. I am taking Boise because I think Kellen Moore will fight to get one last win for his school, but who knows if they will be motivated.

HAWAII BOWL

NEVADA V SOUTHERN MISS
SPREAD: SOUTHERN MISS -6.5

Now this could be an early Xmas present for us. Sure it doesn't have that Hawaii home game feel to it, but we get a chance to see two of the best rushing teams in college collide. Southern Miss had a couple of losses this year which just didn't make sense, including a road loss against a 3-9 UAB team. But their defense is pretty good, and their overall team can compete with a lot of teams. Nevada on the other hand had three early losses against Boise, Oregon and Texas Tech (by one point). They then also lost against two other bowl teams by a total of eight points to combine for five losses. I really hope that this turns out to be a shoot out, but for some sick reason my gut is telling me that it is going to be a Southern Miss shut out.
